OPML has been the typical approach to combining all RSS feeds into a single file that can be exported and imported into any feed reader. Then along comes RSS Mixer. This online tool lets users combine all favorite feeds into one. The drawback to using this is that you cannot simply upload an OPML file, you have to add multiple feeds. But if you have a few feeds that you wanted to follow no matter where you are, like via a mobile device like an iPhone or a widget embedded in your iGoogle homepage, this is a cool way to go. Users start off by giving a title to their 'Mix', then adding feed URL's into the Mix. When RSS Mixer is complete, users get the option to link to the mix, create an Apple Dashboard widget, create a Web Widget, get an RSS feed for the combined feeds, and launch an iPhone version of the mix.

It's a pretty impressive way to easily mix up RSS feeds, and stay on top of them no matter where you are. Our only wish, give us the chance to upload an OPML file.

As Facebook marches towards a potential IPO, savvy (some might say shameless) entrepreneurs around the globe continue to develop foreign clones of the red-hot social network. Many of these have been around for years, and some have been very successful. Here is a look at 10 of the most profitable copycats so far.

StudiVZ

A Facebook clone for the German market, the founders of StudiVZ have already sold the site for more than $100 million. StudiVZ is nearly identical to Facebook in terms of features, functionality, and interface.

Xiaonei

The largest Facebook clone in China, Xiaonei sold to Oak Pacific Interactive, a Chinese Internet conglomerate, and was merged with another social network called 5Q.

The Russian Facebook makes no attempt to hide the fact that it’s a clone; Vkontakte.ru almost exactly resembles Facebook’s design. Russia is also home to rutube.ru, a popular YouTube clone. Maybe a sign that existing social networks aren’t releasing Russian versions fast enough?

DesiMartini

This Facebook clone is designed for India, and prominently features familiar Facebook features such as profiles, friends, groups, and classifieds. Ironically, the site features an embedded YouTube video on the homepage.

Student Social Network is a Facebook clone available in four different countries – Turkey, Russia, Germany, and Great Britain. Its success appears to have been limited, however.

The name roughly translates to the “Pupil Register”, and Schuelerregister.de is another German attempt to copy Facebook. The site is said to be getting a little traction, at least according to Alexa where it has had a 5-digit rank recently.

This German clone appears to be more intended for the 50+ set, but is worth noting as it claims more than 100,000 users.

Schueler

Schueler.cc (your “community center”) is yet another German attempt at cloning Facebook, claiming more than 30,000 schools as part of its network. They have changed the look and feel a bit, but it’s still built around academic and regional networks.

StudentFace

Drawing inspiration in both features and name, StudentFace is a social network for the Australian market. They have added a feature similar to Facebook’s News Feed, allowing you “to see which one of your friends have updated their profiles and/or added friends.”

Qiraz

Last but not least, this Turkish Facebook clone also targets student networks. Google Translate wasn’t much help on this one, but the design is clearly Facebook-inspired.

If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, Facebook must be blushing beat red. At this point, most of the clones will have trouble keeping up with Facebook’s rapid feature rollout, but that won’t stop them from trying to bring the basic model of collegiate and regional networks to their home countries. Those who do it well (Xiaonei, StudiVZ) have proven that a well-done copycat can not only be popular, but a viable means to getting rich quickly.

It was inevitable really: Feedburner’s new owner Google has gone ahead and integrated the feed tracking service into its Blogspot/Blogger.com blog platform, enabling one click redirection of Blogger feeds to Feedburner.

In other words: if you want detailed stats on who is reading your Blogger blog, it’s now easy to do. The integration also works with blogger blogs not hosted on the Blogspot domain. Feedburner’s instructions: “log into your Blogger account, select Settings | Site Feed, enter your FeedBurner feed address and click “Save Settings.”

What we’re interested to see: will Feedburner ever be integrated into Google Analytics, creating a comprehensive stats package for blogs and news sites?

It assumes that all services have APIs, however, which isn’t yet the case with the leader, MySpace. From the site:

YoYo Games is a community for game lovers and developers.

This site acts as a directory for games that have been created and uploaded by users. It doesn’t look like games are reviewed by YoYo Games prior to their being available on the site, which is somewhat surprising. You can search for games by tag word or genre, and viewing a game profile gives you the basic info about the game, related games, other games by the creator, ratings, reviews and comments. You can also take a game badge to embed on your blog, or social networking profile, like MySpace, hi5, Piczo, etc. Most importantly, you can download the game to play on your computer.

You cannot, however, play the game online. Unlike Kongregate, YoYo Games is a directory more than anything else. Adding the ability to upload a video along with the game description could help others know more about the game without having to download it first. It’s also done well to offer resources for the game developers, such as forums and downloadable software, to help users make their own games. In this sense, YoYo Games offers most of its value by way of game developers.

FoxyTunes is releasing a new version that has several upgrades, and a new feature, Signatunes, letting you add music to your emails and blog posts. The new version will be launched tomorrow.

Signatunes comes with the new FoxyTunes upgrade, and shows up in your message editor in services like Yahoo Mail. The FoxyTunes icon, when clicked, will add your currently playing song to your email message or blog post. Signatunes currently works with Facebook Notes and Mail, Yahoo, GMail, MySpace blogs, AOL Mail, Horde, WordPress, Hotmail and SquirrelMail. The song appears to the recipients as a link for the song directing to FoxyTunes’ website.

Additional feature upgrades include a web search or lyrics, artist images, videos, etc., a desktop widget to let you listen to music outside of your Firefox browser, and a podcast preview to find music that you’d like to subscribe to. There’s also an info box for your dashboard to offer more data on songs, album art, recent history and more. There is not yet a Mac version. FoxyTunes’ last announcement was a Twitter inclusion to its service.

eBay’s International classifieds site Kijiji has just been launched in the United States.

Founded and launched in 2005, Kijiji was not available in the US until now. The classifieds site was spread across several countries in Europe and Asia, and was also released in Canada, gaining its user base. Kijiji is free, though the company may offer premium seller options in the future. Given the success of eBay, there are certainly a lot of ways in which a classifieds site could be monetized once Kijiji gains traction. Simplistic in design, Kijiji has a few hints of eBay functionality, including the ability to “watch” an item, email it to a friend, and view other classifieds listings from that user. Other helpful tools include the ability to email the classifieds user directly from their listings pages, and subscribe to specific feeds based on the numerous categories Kijiji offers.

The site is a competitor to Craigslist, though eBay owns a large percent stake (25%) in the company. eBay must have some unseen plans with its growing list of subsidiary classifieds sites, as it owns several others that exist Internationally as well, some of which will be entering the US market in the future. In other eBay news, the company’s PayPal is in continued talks with MySpace for the provision of an e-commerce solution that’s in direct competition with Google Checkout.

The iPhone has faced some criticism in the US for only being available on AT&T, whose network is not highly regarded for its high speed capabilities. iPhone, with its heavy focus on multimedia, is designed to work best on faster networks. Thus, the European strategy is a sharp contrast, offering multiple carriers and taking advantage of the higher quality data network enjoyed by those across the pond.

Growing up in Africa, Matthew Herren saw that many children in cash-strapped rural schools have to make do with textbooks that are decades out of date. Inspired to find a low-cost solution to the problem, he hit on the idea of using satellites to transmit up-to-date educational materials. He aims to establish the technology not through programs run by traditional aid organizations but through a series of self-sustaining businesses.

"We figured there had to be a way for technology to lower the cost" of providing books and other materials to children, Herren says (see "Development Powered by Education"). Herren, who is Swiss, turned to one-way satellite radio transmission because Internet access is unlikely to reach much of the African interior anytime soon. In a test last year, a Swiss foundation called BioVision installed a satellite receiver in a grade school in Mbita Point, Kenya, on the shores of Lake Victoria. The receiver downloaded textbooks onto its hard drive. The information was then transferred to handheld computers rigged with simple Linux-based software for book viewing. Sixty students received current classroom materials.

Herren is now trying to implement his scheme on a grander scale. Working with Bridgeworks, a venture capital firm in Zürich, he has already raised most of the $650,000 needed for seed money. With that capital, Herren hopes to launch a network of businesses across Africa that will sell and service the satellite receivers and handheld PCs. A country's education ministry would hire one of these companies to provide and maintain its educational-download system--and slash the per-pupil cost of providing classroom materials by more than 20 percent.

If delivering educational materials by satellite works as hoped, the basic system could be used to provide remote villages with health and agricultural information. Herren notes that in many villages that lack even roads, all paths literally lead to schools.
