phuser was born out of a realisation that social networking websites were all very well but they didn't do anything practical and weren't about the people you really know.
Looking at real things that real people did brought up another failing - people don't just have one big social network but lots and lots - different groups of friends, family, work, sports, interest groups. And people like to control who knows who. So the task was set to make phuser practical and private. Oh, and it needed to do some cool things with SMS.
