Friction.tv : a video sharing site focused on hot button issues

Friction.tv, a video sharing site focused on hot button issues is set to launch in the US. Previously the site has been focused on UK users, who upload videos commenting on controversial topics like global warming, immigration, and the war in Iraq. Friction.tv also reaches out to cause-oriented organizations such as Stop the War Coalition to use the service to distribute information about their focus issues.

While users can always just upload the same videos to YouTube, Friction.tv caters to the controversial by offering up a dozen issue-oriented channels, such as Politics, Local Issues, and Environment. They also take a page from the YouTube playbook and feature “Hot Debates” (those with lots of plays) and “Fresh Debates” (the most recently uploaded).

Friction.tv launched its beta in March.

Plug-in that gives Apple TV users access to the Jaman library

Jaman, the YouTube for filmmakers, has launched a plug-in that gives Apple TV users access to the Jaman library of movies and shorts for rentals.

This cross-platform application gives you more options for programming that’s been optimized for HD televisions. Once the Jaman plug-in is installed, it will appear as a menu option along with other media choices for music, pictures and television, which currently includes YouTube as well. Jaman content will auto-sync with your Apple TV and you can rent the movie of your choice. Rentals expire after 7 days. Jeff Bezos: After the gold rush, there's innovation ahead

The dot-com boom-and-bust is often compared to the 1849 Gold Rush, and Amazon.com founder Jeff Bezos offers historical evidence showing how similar they were: from the riches made by pioneers to the media hype that attracted luckless speculators. But a better analogy can be found in the early days of the electric industry, he says. In the late 1800s, the U.S. was first wired to support lightbulbs; the following century saw a long procession of new appliances, life-changing advances, and of course some amusing failures. His conclusion in 2003: "I believe there's more innovation ahead of us than behind us."

Screencast-o-Matic Brings Screencast Creation To The Web Browser.

Screencast-o-Matic from Big Nerd Software brings the creation of screencasts to the web browser.

Screencast-o-Matic records audio and screen activity through the use of a Java applet. The result can then be displayed on the site or exported to Quicktime.

There are various screencast software applications, both free and paid that deliver similar functionality however Screencast-o-Matic is the first I’ve seen that is strictly browser based and by nature works across various platforms.

As a service it’s easy to use. A frame is displayed that can be moved over the appropriate window for capture. Mouse movements can be tracked by a red dot and recording is a simple as hitting a button.

It feels a little clunky, visually it won’t win any beauty awards and the display options are limited. There is no obvious embedding code provided and integration that would support direct uploading of screencasts to YouTube or similar video hosting sites is also lacking.

Issues aside, for casual users Screencast-o-Matic is a handy tool that is bound to be copied by others in the future.

The Pirate Bay to Launch YouTube Killer

The rumors about The Pirate Bay launching a streaming video site have been put to rest.

The Pirate Bay team has confirmed in their blog that they are most definitely building a streaming video site. While the details remain sketchy for this latest project, it is certain that Sweden-based The Pirate Bay, known for its heavily publicized legal issues and prosecution for pirated content, is essentially in the process of making a YouTube competitor. It’s largely anticipated because of the copyright concerns that it won’t have to deal with (that’s the hope, at least), that would require The Pirate Bay to constantly pull videos from being shown on the site. The URL for The Pirate Bay’s upcoming streaming video network, thevideobay.org, indicates that the project is very much under wraps, and is open only to developers and beta testers. Perhaps someone can hack into this?

Given the bittorrent tracker’s past run-ins with the law, and the very concept of a resulting streaming video site, I can’t imagine that The Pirate Bay will stay away from trouble for too long. NBC and News Corp. are in the works for their own YouTube Killer, and have just signed CNET to join in their efforts. In related news, YouTube has been banned and sued too many times to count this year, from the U.S. Defense Department to the country of Thailand.

HeyCosmo – Live Video Chat Plus YouTube Integration

HeyCosmo, is an awesome idea let down by horrible usability issues. So here’s the concept: live video conferencing between multiple users, plus the ability to view YouTube videos, photos and blogs, share music and use IM simultaneously in one interface. Surely the ideal communication medium for the multi-tasking, tech-savvy and seemingly A.D.D.-afflicted teen audience?

YouPorn: a pornographic version of YouTube.

Our unemployed friends tell us that the latest “Porn 2.0″ site to see unprecedented growth is YouPorn, a pornographic version of YouTube (not work safe, but no adult material on the frontpage).

We’re told that the company is growing like crazy, and frequently has trouble keeping the site up, no pun intended. Although we couldn’t source internal stats, the Alexa figures suggest that YouPorn is set to overtake its rival Pornotube in the next few days. Compete disagrees, but YouPorn claims that most of its success is in Germany and other European countries - something that won’t show up on the US-only stats from Compete.

Do we really need to tell you what it does? It’s YouTube for porn, so you can probably guess the functionality. It’s another example of the porn industry copying existing sites, rather than leading the pack as many assume. The next multi-million dollar idea for those who aren’t concerned about having an immaculate reputation? May we suggest an adult version of Ustream.tv?
