Global Opportunity for Women helps to transform the lives of the world’s poorest women.

Creating Global Opportunity is about using your creativity to help transform the lives of the world’s poorest women. Whether it’s sending a message to Congress, purchasing products that support the cause, or taking the OPPOR2NITY CHALLENGE, you can do something meaningful to create opportunity for poor women around the world.

All over the world, poverty has a woman’s face. Over a billion people worldwide live on less than $1 a day, and the majority of them are women. Even a small increase in that income has the power to change women’s lives and our world.

Decades of research and experience show that investing in a poor woman is one of the most effective ways to reduce poverty. Even a little more income for a woman translates into better healthcare, education and food for her children—it’s one of the most sustainable ways to end poverty for the whole family.

More income for a woman also means that she is less likely to suffer from HIV/AIDS or fall victim to human trafficking. A woman with more income is also less likely to die during childbirth, because she is more likely to have a midwife or other health worker on hand when she has a baby. If a woman is a victim of domestic violence, more income means she has additional options for escaping it. Just an extra dollar a day can be the factor that enables a woman to make these basic choices.

The GLOBAL OPPORTUNITY FOR WOMEN campaign invites Americans to partner with women around the world as they seek to improve their lives. As a first step, you can learn about what can be done to empower women and why putting that extra income in her pocket is so important.

To thrive, women need greater economic opportunity -- decent jobs, access to credit and technical assistance so that they can start and grow businesses, better education, and job training so that they can get more skilled jobs--all the things that women in the United States have benefited from so much in the past few decades.

Our country, which has the largest economy in the world, is also the world’s largest trading partner and an important provider of international assistance. By investing in poor women through these existing programs, and by providing policy incentives that reward socially responsible business practices, the United States can be a leader in improving the lives of millions of poor women thousands of miles away.

Individuals, businesses, governments and nonprofits all have a role to play in bringing opportunity to women around the world.
